It’s a fun show and all, but damn has this whole interaction between these two people completely ruined the world building for me. The least organic way to make two people with opposing allegiances to form a bond possible…couldn’t have been more artificial if they tried.
I truly mean this, thank you—I felt like the only odd duck here. I know it’s fantasy, but there’s a difference between “realism” and “internal consistency.” Contrived is the perfect word for it. It feels like the writers decided these two had to have a connection before they actually wrote a reason for them to have one.
If the show spends episodes establishing high stakes and a dangerous mission, you can’t just turn that off for a ‘cute’ toxic interaction. Everyone else seems to be hand-waving the toxicity because it’s “fun,” but it completely shatters the stakes for me. It feels like the writers prioritized a specific ‘enemies-to-lovers’ aesthetic over actual character development. The ‘hot but toxic’ trope is such a crutch here.
I’m not looking for gritty realism; I just want the characters to react to manipulation in a way that feels human. It’s frustrating because you can have a complex, messy bond between enemies without making the protagonist look completely incompetent or indifferent to literal psychological manipulation.
It’s hard to stay immersed in the world-building when the protagonist ignores a threat for the sake of a forced bond. Is it too much to ask for an organic progression where the “opposing allegiances” actually create meaningful conflict, rather than just being ignored for the sake of a trope?
You summerized that very well, couldn’t agree more, it’s just spoiled the whole world building for me, quality Donghua with a stupid MC, who seem off, even being manipulated to that extent. What’s really the connection here, I’m not seeing it, why the MC feels burden go all in for her. I’m not a fan of such forced trope

so far its hitting all the worst tropes of donghua:
Adult MC is dumber than a 3year old kid = check;No male can resist trashy women’s charm (aimed at incels) = check;MC gets enemy pregnant quite early in the season.
That’s exactly what ruined it for me as well. For a world to feel authentic, the characters need to have survival instincts. Watching him switch between “eat the berries” and “knight in shining armor” pulled me right out of the story. In those moments, I stopped seeing characters and started noticing the script. I want to be immersed, but it’s hard to stay engaged when the central relationship feels like it was created in a lab to hit specific tropes, rather than developing organically from the story.

Ultimately, if the protagonist is indifferent to their mind being manipulated and their mission being sabotaged, it suggests that the mission isn’t truly significant. This undermines the supposed ‘high stakes’ and makes them feel superficial. I would prefer to see a story where the characters genuinely confront and overcome this manipulation and conflict, rather than ignoring it simply because the character design is impressive.
