I know how you feel. They sacrifice superficial appeal to substance or originality.

I read somewhere that Chinese production studios have to whitewash their MCs from extreme violence or villainous acts in order to pass the censorship. Some have to soften the harem and sexual elements (e.g. accidentally ingesting some blue pills instead of downright rape). So very few studios actually stick to the original characterisations of the main characters, whether for censorship reasons or simply to cater for a wider range of audiences.

But there’s one studio that managed to elevate the MC and even gave it a better appeal than its original character. Not sure if you’re watching RMJI/Fanren. That studio managed to flip Han Li’s character 180 degree, from a totally unlikable selfish dude whose first instinct is to flee in the novel to a prudent and cautious stud. Of course, that doesn’t mean Han Li is the best MC around. I still prefer Shi Hao or MCs like him—bold, devil-may-care, funny and shameless. 😉
