His mother was able to leave it with him as an infant, IMO one of the many mysterious features about the necklace medallian he wears is also the key to entering and exiting safely. We learned a while back from the people on the Sun ship. The metal it's made of and energy it gives off is unknown by everyone he has come across. And sparked interest from some of the oldest living beings in existence that were on the Sun Ship. I really thought by now he would have help find a way to repair that ship and free the girl he met on it who is using her life energy to steer the ship. Hopefully while finding his family he will also be able to find the solution needed to repair her ship.
