Throne of Seal, despite coming out after Soul Land and Soul Land 2, is in every single way INFERIOR to both. I have never seen an author get worse at writing with their subsequent works but somehow Tang Jia San Shao has accomplished the impossible. There are MANY things that are subpar as compared to the other works of this universe so I’ll just pick the worst 3.
1) Neither power-ups or plot armor make sense. Soul Land and SL2 offer you an easy-to-understand power scaling mechanism – with the MCs losing appropriately against much stronger opponents, struggling but still beating stronger opponents, and winning against weaker opponents. You understand why the MC is getting stronger, how he can continue to get strong, and the power-ups don’t fully rely on plot armor. It’s the opposite in Throne of Seal – they don’t bother to explain neither the relative strengths of the 72 demons, the heroes’ strengths stacked up against the demons, or why the MC is always losing to opponents that (based on the worldbuilding the author has GIVEN us, literally from the authors fricking moth) he should not be losing to. So every time he wins the audience doesn’t believe it because we don’t understand HOW he won, logically and according to the world’s power-scaling rules.
2) All the adults are trash in Throne of Seal. Truly lol. It’s like the author went “you know what? y’all had it TOO good with the Seven Devils’ instructors. Let me offer you useless adults who do nothing but righteously preach to the MC who’s too young and simple-minded to think for himself”. The worst is his trash ass father. Everytime that man came on screen I wanted him to die or to exit stage left, either or – I don’t care. At no point did he apologize for being gone, for hiding his existence. Even when MC directly asks his father, his father just sidesteps all accountability to yell about how the MC should grow up and be ready to die for humanity. He was so unbearable lol. His mother isn’t much better – why tf are you allowing this crackhead access to the child???? His teachers also seem to be placeholders as they don’t really teach him a thing. It’s why so much of the plotline is unbelievable – he never has someone to educate him, he’s just handed the keys to a vault and expected to magically become the strongest human fighter on earth. Yeah, sure, okay lol.
2) Throne of Seal’s romance is trite, forced, and overdone. Soul Land and SL2 give you epic romances that are BUILT OVER TIME. Both MCs have years to get to know and love their love interests – it’s not instant, it’s more like friends-to-lovers. Here, you’re expected to enjoy a ‘love-at-second-sight’ type nonsense and once the love interest is introduced almost a THIRD of every single fucking episode is taken up by one of the two staring into the sunset, staring up at the sky, staring out to the horizon……..seriously what the fuck! Who tf asked for this???? Why is this so shittily written? It gets so annoying that you actually end up SKIPPING a majority of each episode because somehow the romance gets ALL the screentime and plot development, character development – hell, even a cohesive fucking narrative arc! – go right out the window. This is the most egregious part because how could an author bake in romance the right way in their first 2 stories and then completely fuck it up in their 3rd????
Anyway, author should be ashamed of themselves lol. You definitely owe your audience an explanation for why tf this is so much worse than your previous works. Did you hire ghostwriters? Did you have no creative control over production or the writers’ room? Like…what is this mess?????????????
