In reply to Black Scythe. I ended up skipping through the fight scene 5 seconds at a time and ran into the end. Can't stand a crappy writing trope like that. It wasn't overconfidence. It was just bad writing. MC was kicking butt, girl gets grabbed, all of a sudden enemy gets powered up and starts blocking MC at every move.
