It was before like 5 years ago, but not anymore. Also a lot of hate for the soul land author too which contributed. For me soul land is too childish and a little cringe too.
Soul Land 1 (Douluo Dalu) is the most watched and highest-grossing donghua of all time. It popularized 3D Chinese animation globally. It can be called the predecessor of everything we watch today.
I read Soul Land before I even watched its donghua. And while watching it read it once again from the beginning weekly to crosscheck. And it sticks to the novel perfectly, just like what Tales of Herding Gods is currently doing.
I read Renegade Immortal and other Er Gen novels too, they have been my favorite web novels, but unfortunately its donghua is such a letdown. The month it started I was over the moon, couldn’t even dream of it becoming a donghua. Wish it didn’t..
It skips and jumps arcs, changes the novel wherever it sees fit, and random people come in and go out. Viewers don’t even know the significance of most of them. As I said, as a huge fan of Er Gen and his novels, it was a huge disappointment for me and most readers, so I don’t even want to mention it in the same sentence as Tales of Herding Gods and Soul Land.
That was 5 years ago sure, but not anymore. On Tencent donghua rankings, #1 is RI, and SL is like somewhere around #10-15. Idc if they are following the novel or not, but statistics say RI is the most popular donghua today. Even if you go to animexin you can see SL2 doesn’t get much attraction as SL did. And not to forget the SL author is the biggest piece on shit on the planet that everyone hates him for being an asshole. Poor guy will probably die alone and sad even will all that money, even using his wife for clout when his mid novels were falling off. What a disgusting human being. Guy wanted to go pro-censorship and ban kissing, or hugging , or seductive characters. You can even see in his work, made the SL MC the biggest simp of a wussy on the planet. The poses they do is cringe, the plot is so linear and 1-dimensional. IDK even know about SL2, it’s probably even worse. Throne of seal is also in the same boat, cringe and simp of a MC. IDK why this asshole author’s novels are getting donghuas at this point, his novels are so average, nothing unique about them.
Sure SL might popularised 3D animation, but again its old news and retired now. Also if your calling it the predecessor, Fanren is the predecessor of SL because it was written way before SL.
