Explanation :
⚠️ MASSIVE SPOILERS AHEAD
1. First understand WHEN this movie happens
The movie does not continue directly from Shi Hao’s normal childhood/young-adult storyline.
It takes place around the end of the Immortal Ancient Era, an extremely ancient period long before most of the events we’ve been following in the donghua.
At this point:
Liu Shen is at her peak.
The Immortal Ancient world is still largely intact.
The Foreign Realm/异域 is attacking.
The darkness behind the Foreign Realm is becoming a catastrophic threat.
The eventual destruction of Immortal Ancient is approaching.
This is the historical disaster that eventually leaves the world divided into the Nine Heavens and Ten Earths.
The movie essentially asks:
> What actually happened during Liu Shen’s final battles against the darkness?
—
2. Why does future Shi Hao appear?
This is probably the most confusing part.
The Shi Hao we see at the beginning is not the young Shi Hao from the current donghua storyline.
He is the future:
Desolate Heavenly Emperor — Huang / 荒天帝
He has already reached an unimaginably high level.
He looks back into the river of time and discovers that something is wrong with the history surrounding Liu Shen.
There is an abnormality involving the cause-and-effect of the Immortal Ancient catastrophe.
So Shi Hao wants to go back.
But there’s a problem.
He cannot simply travel back with his entire body.
The laws of time and cause-and-effect prevent someone of his level from casually entering the past and completely rewriting history.
So Shi Hao uses:
one drop of his true blood
That blood contains an enormous amount of his power and essence.
The blood transforms into a clone/avatar of Shi Hao.
That clone crosses the river of time and arrives during the final period of Immortal Ancient.
This is the basic reason we get:
Future Shi Hao + Peak Liu Shen
in the same story.
—
3. The real protagonist is actually Liu Shen
This movie is almost as much Liu Shen’s story as it is Shi Hao’s.
Remember what Liu Shen means to Shi Hao.
When Shi Hao was still a child in the lower realm, Liu Shen was one of the most important beings in his life.
She protected him.
She guided him.
She taught him.
She watched him grow.
But Shi Hao eventually became separated from her because of the enormous flow of time and events.
The original story never really gave us a proper opportunity to see Shi Hao and peak Liu Shen fighting together.
The movie deliberately fixes that.
That’s why their reunion is such a big deal.
—
4. The Immortal Ancient world is already doomed
The biggest misunderstanding would be:
> “Shi Hao has come back, so surely he will save Immortal Ancient.”
No.
That’s not really what happens.
The destruction of Immortal Ancient is an enormous historical event.
Shi Hao’s arrival can influence battles and save people temporarily, but he cannot simply erase the entire historical catastrophe.
This is one of the movie’s main themes:
You can change individual events, but the weight of history is extremely difficult to change.
This is also why the ending is bittersweet rather than a conventional victory.
—
5. The Foreign Realm attacks
The major enemy forces are connected to the Foreign Realm’s Immortal Kings.
Among the important enemies are characters such as:
Kun Di
Red King
Yu Tuo
Wushang
and other powerful Immortal Kings.
The Foreign Realm possesses something extremely important:
The Origin Ancient Artifact
This artifact is connected to the darkness.
Its importance isn’t simply that it is a powerful weapon.
The deeper problem is that it contains/links to a source of dark power capable of corrupting living beings and spreading darkness.
So Liu Shen’s goal isn’t merely:
> “Kill the enemy.”
Her real objective is:
Destroy or neutralize the source through which the darkness can continue spreading.
This is why she repeatedly enters enemy territory.
—
6. What does “Nine Tribulations” actually mean?
This is the heart of the title.
九劫焚天
roughly means:
Nine Tribulations Burning Heaven
It refers to Liu Shen’s legendary repeated incursions into the Foreign Realm.
She doesn’t just sit behind the defensive line.
She repeatedly goes into enemy territory.
That’s extraordinarily dangerous because she’s effectively entering the enemy’s home ground.
The phrase associated with her is essentially:
Nine entries into the Foreign Realm.
She goes in again and again, fighting against overwhelmingly powerful enemies.
Every time she returns, she is increasingly wounded.
And yet she continues.
That’s the “nine tribulations.”
—
7. Why doesn’t Liu Shen simply retreat?
Because Liu Shen understands something very important:
If they remain purely defensive, eventually the darkness will overwhelm them.
So she decides that the only possibility of survival is to attack the source.
This is why she takes enormous risks.
Her objective becomes:
> Get into the Foreign Realm → reach the source of darkness → destroy/neutralize it → give the Immortal Ancient side a chance to survive.
This is essentially a suicidal offensive strategy.
—
8. Shi Hao meets the great figures of Immortal Ancient
Once future Shi Hao arrives, he doesn’t immediately just start destroying everyone.
He becomes involved with the major Immortal Ancient figures.
Among them are legendary beings such as:
Six Paths of Reincarnation Immortal King
and
Immortal King Wushang / other great Immortal Ancient experts.
Shi Hao is effectively meeting people whom, from his own perspective, belong to an extremely distant past.
That’s important emotionally.
Imagine becoming one of the greatest beings in existence and then returning to an era where people who have already become legends in your history are still alive.
It’s basically Shi Hao walking into his own world’s ancient history.
—
9. Shi Hao and Liu Shen finally fight together
This is one of the most important moments.
Shi Hao isn’t the inexperienced boy Liu Shen once protected.
He has become someone capable of standing beside her.
So there’s a beautiful reversal:
Past:
Liu Shen protects Shi Hao.
Movie:
Shi Hao protects Liu Shen.
That is the emotional payoff.
The student has finally become powerful enough to stand beside his teacher.
That’s why their relationship in this movie isn’t primarily romantic.
It’s much closer to:
teacher → disciple → family → two beings protecting each other
—
10. The strategy against the Foreign Realm
The Immortal Ancient side develops a desperate plan.
The basic idea is:
Defensive force
Some of the strongest Immortal Kings remain around the defensive line/Tian Yuan to hold back the Foreign Realm.
Meanwhile:
Liu Shen + other powerful experts
push deep into enemy territory.
Their objective:
destroy/neutralize the Origin Ancient Artifact and cut the darkness at its source.
It’s an extremely risky strategy.
Because once they enter the Foreign Realm, they’re surrounded by enemies.
—
11. The battle becomes catastrophic
And this is where the movie becomes tragic.
The Immortal Ancient experts fight the Foreign Realm’s strongest warriors.
You see battles between:
Immortal Kings vs Immortal Kings
while ordinary armies are basically irrelevant compared with the scale of these beings.
The battlefield is destroyed.
Immortal Ancient’s strongest figures begin dying.
Even legendary characters cannot simply survive this war.
And Liu Shen is pushed to her absolute limit.
—
12. Shi Hao changes things—but he doesn’t completely change history
This is the important distinction.
Shi Hao’s arrival is not meaningless.
He changes events.
He saves Liu Shen from certain situations.
He interferes with the enemy.
He helps expose the deeper problem behind the darkness.
But he cannot simply say:
> “I’m future Shi Hao. Everyone stop fighting. Immortal Ancient is saved.”
The timeline has enormous resistance.
The movie ultimately treats history as something that can be influenced, but not casually rewritten.
This is why the result remains tragic.
—
13. The REALLY important twist: the problem isn’t simply the Foreign Realm
This is where the movie connects to the much larger Perfect World mythology.
The darkness ultimately goes much deeper than:
> “Bad guys from another realm attack.”
There are entities and forces behind the Foreign Realm’s darkness.
The movie hints at the enormous existence associated with the Corpse Immortal Emperor / Shi Hao’s later enemies and the deeper darkness.
This is why Shi Hao realizes that killing several Immortal Kings isn’t enough.
The real problem is the source of darkness itself.
One interpretation of the movie’s time anomaly is that a deeper dark existence is interfering with the historical process. Some contemporary recaps identify the Corpse Immortal Emperor as being involved in the abnormality Shi Hao discovers in this timeline.
—
14. The most heartbreaking part: Liu Shen still loses
This is where the movie refuses to give us a happy ending.
Even after Shi Hao comes back…
Even after he fights beside Liu Shen…
Even after the Immortal Ancient side fights desperately…
Immortal Ancient still falls.
This is essential.
Shi Hao can save certain people.
He can change certain battles.
He can delay certain disasters.
But he cannot simply erase the historical destruction of Immortal Ancient.
—
15. Liu Shen’s final fate
Liu Shen suffers enormous damage.
Her origin is severely injured.
Her physical existence cannot continue normally.
And eventually she is forced into the fate that Perfect World viewers already know.
She falls into the lower realm.
And eventually:
she becomes the Willow Tree in Shi Village.
So when you think about the little willow tree from Shi Hao’s childhood, this movie gives that character an enormous amount of additional context.
The seemingly quiet willow tree that watched over Shi Hao…
was once:
the legendary Ancestral Sacrifice Spirit who fought an entire era’s darkness.
That’s why Liu Shen is such an important character.
—
16. And then comes Shi Hao’s farewell
This is probably the emotional climax.
Shi Hao’s blood clone has a limited existence.
He cannot stay permanently in the past.
Eventually he must return to the river of time.
So after fighting alongside Liu Shen, he has to leave.
And this is incredibly painful because:
He came back specifically because he couldn’t accept losing her.
But even after crossing millions of years of time…
he still can’t completely prevent her fate.
What he can do is fight beside her once.
And finally say goodbye.
The movie therefore gives Shi Hao something the original timeline largely denied him:
A proper farewell with Liu Shen.
This is why contemporary coverage describes the ending as the two finally fighting side-by-side before Shi Hao’s time-limited avatar disappears.
—
17. But there’s another crazy part: Kun Di and the river of time
The ending also deals with Kun Di.
Kun Di attempts to escape through the river of time.
But now he encounters the future Shi Hao.
And this is where you really see the difference between:
Immortal King
and
future Shi Hao.
Shi Hao has already reached the terrifying realm of the later Quasi-Immortal Emperor/higher existence.
So Kun Di, despite being an extremely powerful Immortal King, is simply outclassed.
Shi Hao ultimately kills him.
A contemporary account of the movie specifically describes Kun Di entering the river of time and being killed by Quasi-Immortal Emperor Shi Hao.
—
18. Shi Hao then repairs the timeline
After the intervention, Shi Hao returns to his own era.
The altered timeline creates problems because he has interfered with history.
So he essentially works to restore the proper causal order.
The important point is:
History is corrected rather than completely rewritten.
That’s why the broad historical outcome remains:
Immortal Ancient → destruction → Nine Heavens and Ten Earths.
The movie isn’t saying:
> “Everything was changed and Immortal Ancient survived.”
It is saying:
> Shi Hao’s intervention happened, but history ultimately still reached the necessary major outcome.
—
19. So did Shi Hao actually save Liu Shen?
Yes and no.
Yes, in the immediate sense.
He saves her from certain deaths during the battle.
He fights alongside her.
He gives her additional time.
He helps her survive.
But:
No, he cannot prevent the enormous historical tragedy.
Liu Shen’s fate remains extremely tragic.
She ultimately loses her previous body/origin and eventually becomes the willow associated with Shi Village.
That’s why the movie isn’t really about:
> “Shi Hao goes back and saves Liu Shen.”
It’s more about:
> “Shi Hao finally gets the chance to stand beside the person who once protected him.”
—
20. Why the movie is called “Nine Tribulations Burning Heaven”
Think of the title metaphorically.
Nine Tribulations = Liu Shen’s repeated journeys into the Foreign Realm and the increasingly terrible battles she faces.
Burning Heaven = the enormous war and destruction spreading across the ancient world.
The title essentially summarizes Liu Shen’s entire Immortal Ancient journey:
> She repeatedly enters hell itself to protect everyone behind her.
—

22. The deepest meaning of the movie
There are actually three stories happening simultaneously.
Story 1 — The war
Immortal Ancient vs Foreign Realm
That’s the obvious action plot.
Story 2 — The mystery
Why is the historical timeline behaving strangely?
That’s the time-travel/darkness plot.
Story 3 — The emotional story
A disciple who has become the Desolate Heavenly Emperor returns to the past to stand beside his teacher one last time.
That’s the real heart of the movie.
And that’s why the ending isn’t a traditional:
> “Hero defeats villain → everyone lives happily.”
It’s:
> “Shi Hao couldn’t save the entire era, but he finally got the opportunity to fight beside Liu Shen and repay what she once did for him.”
The official WeTV synopsis itself frames the movie around Liu Shen’s search for hope and Shi Hao’s true-blood clone returning through time to seek a way to eradicate the darkness.
One particularly important takeaway
The Shi Hao in this movie is basically a future, vastly more powerful version of the protagonist you are currently following in the main donghua.
So if you’re watching the weekly Perfect World and wondering:
> “How the hell did this kid eventually become THAT Shi Hao?”
—this movie is showing you a glimpse of the destination, not the journey.
And Liu Shen’s importance to that journey is much, much bigger than the main series initially makes it appear.
