Live action adaptations are hard to pull well though
Be it anime or donghua, the budget constraints and casting availabilities really hold back production value heavy genres like fantasy
I mean Rakshasa street and Tales of Herding Gods have already got live actions and I’m fairly sure they pale in comparison
It’s a tough truth to swallow, but live-action adaptations rarely—if ever—capture the magic of their donghua counterparts. When you’re dealing with world-ending cultivation techniques and celestial landscapes, reality usually gets in the way.
I have to admit, back when I watched the full seasons of the 2018 BTTH and Martial Universe, I didn’t even realize they were based on novels. But in 2019, I finally discovered the donghua world—and that was a total game-changer. Seeing the actual source material done right made me realize just how much of a mess those live-action adaptations really were.
By the time Soul Land live action came out, I was already deep into the donghua, and the quality gap was impossible to ignore. I couldn’t even make it past five episodes. Between the “cringe” CGI and that forced, awkward humor that seems to plague every single one of these adaptations, it’s just painful to watch.
In donghua, the art style is built for the impossible. In live action, unless you have a Hollywood-level budget, the “spirit rings” or “flame transformations” often look like cheap overlays. It turns a high-stakes battle into something that feels like a low-budget stage play.
IMHO, RMJI is currently the outlier. It managed to stay decent because they’ve stuck to the grounded, grittier parts of the early story. It worked because it stayed grounded, but I’m skeptical about how they’ll handle things as the scale gets bigger
It’s a bit unfortunate that we basically already know how her end is going to be, so the spin-off is less about opening new lanes and more on concluding expanded background
